Kano NNPP Leadership Crisis Worsens as Abiya Takes Over as Acting Chairman

Fresh tension has emerged within the New Nigeria Peoples Party in Kano State following a major leadership change that has deepened internal disagreements among party members.

The crisis escalated after Abdullahi Zubairu Imam Abiya was named acting chairman of the party in the state. His appointment came shortly after the removal of the former chairman, Hashimu Dungurawa.

Party officials said the decision was reached during an emergency meeting of the State Executive Committee held at the NNPP secretariat in Kano. Members of the committee reportedly approved the leadership transition after reviewing developments surrounding the former chairman’s position.

Explaining the process, the party’s assistant legal adviser, Yusuf Mukhtar, noted that the appointment followed the constitutional procedures of the party.

Mukhtar maintained that the executive committee acted within its authority and ensured that due process guided the decision before installing Abiya in an acting capacity.

Sources inside the party revealed that the leadership shake-up began at the grassroots level. The Dawakin Tofa Local Government Executive Committee reportedly submitted a formal recommendation urging disciplinary action against Dungurawa.

That recommendation was based on a resolution earlier adopted by officials of the Gargari Ward Executive Committee. The ward leaders held a meeting weeks after the general elections and concluded that the former chairman had acted in ways that conflicted with the party’s interests.

Following deliberations, the state leadership reviewed the report and endorsed the ward’s recommendation, which ultimately led to the removal of Dungurawa and the installation of Abiya as acting chairman.

Party insiders explained that the move was intended to stabilize the organization, strengthen internal discipline, and rebuild unity among members ahead of future political activities in the state.

In his first remarks after assuming the new role, Abiya assured party members that he would lead with fairness and inclusiveness.

He also pledged loyalty to the party’s national leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and the state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf.

According to him, the priority moving forward is to consolidate the party’s influence and strengthen its political structure as it prepares for upcoming electoral contests.

Commentary and Analysis

The leadership dispute within the Kano chapter of the NNPP reflects the complex dynamics often present in political organizations after elections.

Internal disagreements can arise from issues ranging from local power struggles to differing strategic visions for the party’s future.

In Kano, the NNPP has become a significant political force largely due to the influence of Rabiu Kwankwaso and the electoral victory of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

However, analysts say that maintaining unity within such a strong political movement requires careful management of internal disputes and transparent leadership processes.

The emergence of Abdullahi Abiya as acting chairman may temporarily stabilize the situation, but observers believe the party will need sustained reconciliation efforts to prevent further divisions.
