Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has defended his planned defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting the decision is aimed at advancing the welfare of his people.
Speaking on Saturday during the Civic Reception: Unveiling of Margi National Attire in Jimeta, Adamawa State, Kefas emphasized that his move is guided by patriotism rather than political rivalry. The event, organized to celebrate and preserve Margi heritage, attracted prominent guests, including three Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors and other dignitaries.
The governor had previously postponed the ceremonial defection, originally scheduled for November 19, 2025, following the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State.
Addressing attendees, Kefas said, “This is an event where all Margi nations come together to reflect on our past, present, and future. This is not a political gathering. Governor Fintiri is a true Margi son and a unifying figure. I have greatly valued our neighborhood and brotherhood.
“The only reason for any disagreements is my decision to move to the All Progressives Congress. But I believe, in the end, he will understand that my choice is in the best interest of my people. I wish you all the very best.”
Makinde Criticises Move Toward One-Party State, Praises Margi Nation’s Unity
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has criticised political forces attempting to push Nigeria toward a one-party system, stressing the country’s diversity as a safeguard against such moves.
“From history, we know Nigeria is made up of several nations. For those trying to push us toward a one-party state, this is why it will not happen,” Makinde said.
Speaking during the Civic Reception: Unveiling of Margi National Attire in Jimeta, Adamawa State, Makinde also praised the Margi people for honouring Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, describing the event as a rare display of unity.
“For the Margi nation, people think it is easy to give honour to one of your own, but prophets are not always appreciated in their own home. Today’s event is unique,” he said.
Makinde further commended Fintiri’s rise through public service, noting, “I congratulate my brother, Governor Fintiri. I read through his trajectory in the programme book—elected as Minority Leader in the House of Assembly, later Majority Leader, then Deputy Speaker, then Speaker, and today, governor. We know what he is made of. If given a chance, he will go a mile.”
Also speaking at the event, Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, lauded the Margi nation and conveyed the goodwill of other PDP governors.
“We are happy to be with Governor Umaru Fintiri and to represent everyone in the PDP, especially those governors who could not be here. We identify with this day and will support the development of culture and unity,” Mohammed said.
Emphasising the role of history in nation-building, he added, “History is not about the past, but we study it to understand the present and to overcome our challenges.”
Mohammed also announced a ₦50 million donation on behalf of the PDP Governors’ Forum to support cultural development in Adamawa State.
