Nollywood actress Teniola Aladese has advised that women should experience living independently before marriage, rather than moving directly from their parents’ home into their husband’s house.
During a recent episode of the That’s What She Said vodcast, Aladese explained that living alone before marriage helps women understand themselves better and prepares them for life with a partner.
According to her, many women enter marriage without fully knowing their preferences or the type of behaviour they can tolerate. This lack of self-awareness can lead to shock or frustration when they encounter habits and quirks of their spouse that they have never dealt with before.
Aladese emphasised that living alone allows women to learn more about their personality, boundaries, and the kind of treatment they will accept or reject.
“This self-knowledge helps reduce regrets that might arise later in marriage,” she said, noting that skipping this stage can make marital life feel overwhelming, as everything is new at once.
She added that women who know themselves beforehand are better equipped to build healthy, stable homes and avoid painful surprises.
Aladese explained:
“A lot of women just go from their family’s houses to their husband’s house. But they don’t really know what they like or what kind of traits their husband-to-be has. So they are shocked when they enter into the home and see mannerisms they haven’t experienced before.
But I feel like when you live alone before getting married, you get to know yourself. You understand what you like, what nonsense you will tolerate, and what you won’t.”
