Strong opposition has emerged from allies of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso following reports that United States lawmakers are considering sanctions linked to a proposed human rights accountability framework involving Nigeria. The move, which is part of a legislative initiative in Washington, has triggered sharp reactions from those close to the former Kano State governor.
The proposal, titled the Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026, seeks to address concerns about religious persecution and violence. Among its provisions are measures that could impose penalties on certain individuals and groups accused of involvement in human rights violations, including Fulani militia factions and specific political figures.
Reacting to the development, Kwankwaso’s aide, Folashade Aliu, strongly rejected any attempt to associate her principal with wrongdoing. During an appearance on Arise Television, she described the suggested action as driven by political bias rather than credible evidence, insisting that Kwankwaso’s public record reflects national service and integrity.
Aliu also dismissed claims suggesting any link between the former presidential candidate and religious extremism. She pointed to the diverse religious composition of his political team as proof of his inclusive leadership style, emphasizing that individuals from different faith backgrounds have worked closely with him without discrimination.
Furthermore, she questioned elements of the proposed legislation that referenced Sharia law, arguing that assertions portraying Kwankwaso as a pioneer of such policies were inaccurate. According to her, these claims misrepresent historical facts and unfairly attempt to implicate him in matters unrelated to his governance record.
Describing the entire process as both malicious and politically driven, Aliu maintained that Kwankwaso remains committed to national unity and democratic values. She insisted that the allegations lack substance and warned against drawing conclusions without verifiable proof.
The controversy highlights growing international scrutiny over Nigeria’s internal security and human rights situation, while also underscoring the sensitivity surrounding political figures named in foreign legislative proposals.
