Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappé has left the France national team camp and returned to Madrid after developing inflammation in his right ankle, officials confirmed on Friday.
“Mbappé departs France camp and returns to Madrid due to right ankle inflammation,” reported Fabrizio Romano. The full extent of the injury has not been revealed, and it remains uncertain whether it will impact his participation in upcoming Real Madrid fixtures.
The 26-year-old forward had just netted two goals in France’s 4-0 victory over Ukraine on Thursday, helping the 2018 World Cup champions secure qualification for the 2026 tournament.
His brace also took his career goal total to 400, though Mbappé dismissed the milestone, emphasizing that he has loftier ambitions in football history.
France coach Didier Deschamps, along with Real Madrid’s medical team, decided that returning to Madrid for further scans was the safest course after the ankle continued to swell and cause discomfort. Sources told ESPN that there are no major concerns, but Madrid’s staff will keep a close eye on his recovery.
Mbappé’s exit follows shortly after teammate Eduardo Camavinga also left the French camp due to a minor muscle injury. Real Madrid are scheduled to face Elche in La Liga on November 23, before traveling to Athens to meet Olympiacos in the Champions League on November 26, making Mbappé’s fitness a top priority.
Meanwhile, France will continue their training camp without the forward, preparing for their FIFA World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijan on Sunday.
