The Labour Party (LP) in Ogun State has intensified its political outreach ahead of the 2027 elections, formally inviting prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) figure Segun Sowunmi to contest the governorship seat on its platform.

According to reports, the invitation was made on Friday when a delegation of Labour Party leaders, led by the state chairman Oluwabukola Soyoye, paid a courtesy visit to Sowunmi at his residence in Ibara GRA, Abeokuta.

During the visit, Soyoye urged the former spokesperson to ex–Vice President Atiku Abubakar to align with the Labour Party and lead its governorship bid in 2027. She stated that Ogun State needs a new political direction and described Sowunmi as a leader whose values, ideology, and vision resonate with those of the party.

“We believe Ogun State deserves a fresh start, and we want you to join the Labour Party and contest the governorship election on our platform,” Soyoye said.

In his response, Sowunmi commended the Labour Party for maintaining ideological consistency and applauded its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for expanding the party’s national appeal.

He noted that the Labour Party’s showing in the last presidential election—where it secured over six million votes against the ruling party’s eight million—underscored its rising influence and grassroots-driven political model.

Sowunmi also reaffirmed his commitment to the progress of Ogun State, describing it as a state with enormous untapped potential that requires purposeful leadership to address its longstanding challenges.

“The question of governorship eligibility for 2027 is one I have carefully examined. With all due respect, when I look across the field, I do not see anyone more prepared, more intentional, or more grounded in policy-driven governance than myself,” he said.

He added that his political journey has been guided by a desire to see Nigeria thrive and to build a nation that future generations can be proud of.

“I have dedicated my energy, resources, prayers, and efforts toward the idea of a better Nigeria. I have held nothing back in pursuing that vision,” Sowunmi stated.

Addressing the current state of Ogun, Sowunmi acknowledged the administration’s efforts in road construction, noting that measurable progress has been made compared to past governments. However, he emphasized that poor road infrastructure remains a major concern for residents.

He argued that the state’s biggest challenge lies in the failure to fully capitalize on its multiple economic growth hubs, stressing that Ogun requires leadership with a deeper appreciation of its strategic position and development opportunities.

“It is embarrassing that Ogun State is often associated with bad roads, even though I admit the current governor has constructed more kilometers of roads than his predecessors. The real issue is the lack of a comprehensive vision that understands Ogun as a state with growth poles everywhere,” he said.
