The National Vice Chairman (South West) of the Labour Party (LP), Abayomi Arabambi, has dismissed reports suggesting that the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has formally left the party.
Speaking during an interview on ARISE News, Arabambi stated that Obi has not submitted any official resignation letter, insisting that claims of his exit are unfounded.
He accused Peter Obi and Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, of attempting to unlawfully seize control of the party’s structure, stressing that the former Anambra State governor neither founded nor owns the Labour Party.
“Peter Obi has not resigned from the Labour Party. If he truly intends to leave, let him present a formal resignation letter. There is no political platform called a ‘coalition’ under Nigerian law,” Arabambi said.
He further alleged that Obi and Governor Otti convened an unauthorised National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, describing the gathering as illegal and devoid of constitutional backing.
“They lack the authority to call a NEC meeting or appoint Nenadi Usman and impose her leadership on the party. Such actions violate the party’s constitution,” he added.
Arabambi emphasised that the Labour Party provided the platform that elevated Obi to national prominence, noting that the surge of support during the 2023 election stemmed largely from public frustration with the existing political establishment rather than Obi alone.
“The Labour Party made Peter Obi. Peter Obi did not make the Labour Party. Nigerians voted against the old order, not solely because of Obi,” he said.
Despite ongoing legal disputes, Arabambi expressed confidence that the party would overcome its current challenges and remain a strong contender in the 2027 general elections.
“The legally recognised National Chairman of the Labour Party remains Julius Abure until the Court of Appeal rules otherwise. We respect the rule of law and will pursue justice through all legal channels,” he stated.
“This issue will be resolved. The courts understand the urgency, and the Labour Party will appear on the ballot in 2027. Political parties must adhere strictly to their constitutions, and we have done exactly that. History will vindicate our actions,” Arabambi concluded.
