The Nenadi Usman-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has officially endorsed Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, as the party’s national leader.
Gossip News Now reports that the announcement came after a meeting of the party’s Interim National Working Committee (NWC) held in Abuja. The decision was conveyed in a communiqué issued by the factional National Secretary, Darlington Nwokocha.
This development follows weeks after the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on December 31, 2025.
According to the communiqué, the NWC meeting focused on the party’s stability, growth, and strategic direction. The committee resolved unanimously to recognise Governor Otti as the national leader of the Labour Party.
Nwokocha stated, “The NWC, in a unanimous decision, affirmed its recognition of His Excellency, Governor Alex Chioma Otti, as the National Leader of the Labour Party.”
He added that the meeting, chaired by Senator Nenadi Usman, was conducted in accordance with the Labour Party Constitution 2019 (as amended).
“The meeting was convened during a period of heightened political activity nationwide, ahead of the party’s congresses and the forthcoming National Convention,” Nwokocha said.
The communiqué also highlighted reports from the ongoing nationwide membership revalidation and registration exercise, preparations for party congresses and the national convention, and discussions on Obi’s departure from the party.
On Obi’s exit, the NWC expressed goodwill toward the former presidential candidate.
“The National leadership of the Labour Party wishes His Excellency Mr Peter Obi success in his future political endeavours and his new political party,” Nwokocha said.
He emphasised, however, that the Labour Party remained united and ideologically committed.
“The Labour Party remains united, indivisible, indissoluble, and steadfast in its mission to build a Nigeria founded on equal opportunity, social justice, and good governance,” he added.
The Usman-led faction also welcomed the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) reaffirmation of the Supreme Court judgment delivered on April 4, 2025, which removed Julius Abure as national chairman of the party.
Following this ruling, the faction called on INEC to fully recognise its leadership.
It urged the commission “to accord Senator Nenadi Usman and Senator Darlington Nwokocha all rights, recognition, and privileges attached to the offices of National Chairman and National Secretary of the Labour Party, in strict compliance with the rule of law and the Supreme Court judgment.”
