The Chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Government, Jubril Emilagba, has prohibited people from sleeping in Oyingbo Market to strengthen security and protect lives and property.
Speaking on Friday at a security meeting with market executives and members, Emilagba explained that the measure is part of ongoing efforts to ensure safety across local markets. He noted that overnight stays in the market create opportunities for criminal activities and pose risks to traders and their goods.
“No one is permitted to sleep in the market. This directive is strictly for security reasons, to prevent criminal elements from taking advantage of the environment,” he said, stressing that markets should remain centres for lawful trade rather than overnight habitation.
Emilagba added that the local government would collaborate with security agencies and market leadership to ensure full compliance. “We are committed to ensuring that Oyingbo Market remains safe for traders, customers, and residents,” he said.
The chairman also reiterated the administration’s focus on engaging stakeholders regularly, noting that cooperation with traders is key to maintaining an orderly and secure market environment.
During the meeting, Emilagba urged traders to register for the National Identification Number (NIN) and with the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency, describing both as essential tools for identity management and effective security planning.
He also encouraged eligible traders to participate in the ongoing All Progressives Congress (APC) e-registration exercise to foster grassroots political inclusion.
