Lamido Issues 10-Day Deadline to Resolve PDP Crisis, Seeks Leadership Reset

A fresh wave of debate has emerged within the Peoples Democratic Party after former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido demanded urgent steps to resolve the party’s lingering internal disputes.

Lamido made his position known while meeting with a large group of political allies and former officials at his office in Kano. The gathering reportedly included former local government leaders, commissioners who served during his administration, and other long-time supporters.

During the meeting, Lamido insisted that the party must resolve its internal conflicts within ten days, warning that continued division could weaken the PDP’s future political prospects.

According to Gossip News Now reports that, the veteran politician also called for a major leadership restructuring within the party, arguing that the officials produced during the party’s Ibadan elective convention should be dissolved.

Lamido claimed that individuals outside the party’s core leadership had gained excessive influence in its affairs. In his view, these external forces have sidelined long-standing members who were instrumental in building the PDP.

To address the situation, the former governor proposed the establishment of a neutral caretaker structure that would oversee the party’s affairs temporarily. The purpose of such an arrangement, he explained, would be to stabilise the party and prepare it for future primaries.

He also encouraged prominent party figures—including Nyesom Wike and acting national chairman Umar Damagum—to set aside their disagreements and support efforts aimed at reconciliation.

At the same time, Lamido acknowledged that the party’s current constitutional leadership remains in place until the end of their tenure. He noted that Damagum and the party’s national secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, are still the official leaders until their mandate expires later in the year.

The former governor cautioned against sudden changes that could disrupt the party’s structure. According to him, poorly managed transitions could affect the ambitions of many party members preparing to contest elections.

Lamido also clarified that his legal interventions concerning the party are not driven by personal political ambitions. Instead, he said his goal is to preserve the PDP’s institutional legacy and ensure that internal processes remain fair and transparent.

In his remarks, he urged party members to remain patient while discussions continue, encouraging them to monitor developments closely as the leadership transition deadline approaches.

Commentary and Analysis

Lamido’s intervention highlights the deep divisions that have affected the PDP in recent years. Internal disagreements over leadership structure, influence, and strategy have created tensions among party stakeholders.

Calls for caretaker committees are not unusual in Nigerian political parties when disputes threaten organisational stability. Such committees are often used to temporarily manage party affairs while preparing for new congresses or elections.

However, the success of this approach depends heavily on cooperation among key power blocs within the party. Without consensus among influential figures like Wike and Damagum, implementing a leadership reset may prove difficult.

Lamido’s decision to publicly issue a timeline for resolving the crisis suggests growing concern among senior party figures about the PDP’s readiness for future elections.

Whether his proposal leads to reconciliation or further debate remains to be seen, but it underscores the urgency many stakeholders feel about restoring unity within one of Nigeria’s most prominent opposition parties.
