Mamelodi Sundowns have stormed into the CAF Champions League group stage after a commanding 7-1 aggregate victory over Nigeria’s Remo Stars.

The South African champions sealed their qualification with a 2-0 win in Sunday’s second leg at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, completing a dominant display over both legs.

Despite holding a comfortable lead from their 5-1 first-leg triumph in Abeokuta, the Brazilians showed no complacency. Nuno Santos and Peter Shalulile found the net to extend Sundowns’ unbeaten run in continental competitions.

From the onset, Sundowns imposed their authority. Khuliso Mudau nearly broke the deadlock early on, cutting in from the right before forcing a sharp save from the Remo Stars goalkeeper.

The breakthrough came in the 21st minute, when Aubrey Modiba’s relentless pressing forced a turnover deep in Remo Stars’ half. His cut-back found Santos, who finished coolly to make it 1-0.

Just before halftime, Modiba delivered another decisive contribution, whipping in a precise corner that Shalulile converted to double the advantage.

Remo Stars fought hard after the break, with Samson Olasupo coming close twice — first hitting the side netting and later missing narrowly from distance.

At the other end, Sundowns continued to threaten, with Shalulile denied a brace by a last-ditch block, while goalkeeper Obassa Adebiyi produced several impressive saves to prevent further damage.

With the result, Remo Stars have now failed to progress past the preliminary round in four consecutive CAF Champions League campaigns.

Their elimination leaves Rivers United as Nigeria’s only remaining representative in continental football this season, following their 3-2 aggregate win over Black Bulls of Mozambique.
