Portugal national team manager, Roberto Martinez, has firmly dismissed questions surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s relevance in the squad, stressing that the legendary forward continues to be an essential presence both on the pitch and behind the scenes.
Speaking ahead of what is widely expected to be Ronaldo’s final appearance at a FIFA World Cup this summer, Martinez highlighted the 40-year-old’s enduring influence, leadership qualities, and impressive scoring contributions for the national side.
Currently playing his club football with Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Nassr, Ronaldo has come under renewed scrutiny in recent months. Although he has maintained a steady flow of goals, some critics have raised concerns about whether his intensity and work rate still meet the demands of top-level international football.
Martinez, however, argued that such criticism often fails to acknowledge how Ronaldo has adapted his playing style and the significant value he continues to offer the team.
In an interview with ESPN, the Portuguese coach said, “It’s important to understand that Cristiano Ronaldo is known all over the world, and everyone naturally has an opinion about him.
“The player who represented Portugal over two decades ago is not the same as the one we see today. His role has evolved into that of a striker who relies more on intelligent movement and positioning.
“He is someone who helps us close out matches. As the highest goalscorer in international football history, having a player who has netted 25 goals in his last 30 appearances for the national team is a huge asset.”
Martinez emphasized that his evaluation of Ronaldo is based entirely on current performance and commitment, not past glories, pointing to the forward’s professionalism and unmatched experience at international level.
“This is about the present, not what he achieved 10 years ago. His dedication is exceptional. He is the only footballer worldwide to have played more than 220 international matches,” he added.
“With his vast experience, commitment, and professionalism, he sets the standard. He motivates the group in the dressing room.
“On the pitch, he occupies defenders, opens up space for teammates, and shares invaluable experience with the squad, all of which are extremely important for us.”
Addressing concerns about effort and mentality, Martinez made it clear that no player is above the team’s standards.
“A player’s weakness shows when there is a lack of effort or the wrong mindset. Anyone who fails to display commitment or the right attitude does not get selected for the national team,” he stated.
