Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, erupted in celebration on Monday as Governor Douye Diri was formally received into the All Progressives Congress (APC), ending months of speculation about his political future.
Diri, who resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on October 15, had reportedly held weeks of discreet consultations with top APC leaders before making his defection public.
From as early as 8 a.m., thousands of supporters from all eight local government areas trooped into Yenagoa—many clad in white shirts and colorful outfits—despite heavy morning rain. Drummers, dancers, and jubilant crowds took over major streets, creating a carnival-like atmosphere across the city.
The 5,000-capacity Samson Siasia Sports Complex, venue of the reception ceremony, was filled to capacity, forcing security agencies to restrict further entry to avoid possible stampede risks as more supporters attempted to get in.
Prominent political leaders who arrived in Yenagoa for the event include Akwa Ibom State Governor Pastor Umo Eno, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, former Edo Governor Adams Oshiomhole, and the Minister of Regional Development, Engineer Abubakar Momoh.
With his formal entry into the ruling party, Diri’s move effectively ends months of speculation and marks one of the most significant political shifts in Bayelsa’s recent history.
