Kylian Mbappe extended his sensational scoring streak to 11 consecutive games, netting the decisive goal as Real Madrid edged past nine-man Getafe 1-0 on Sunday night to reclaim top spot in La Liga.

The French forward’s late winner ensured Madrid regained their two-point lead over Barcelona, who had briefly gone top after their win over Girona earlier in the weekend.

Returning from a minor ankle injury that sidelined him during France’s World Cup qualifiers, Mbappe endured a quiet first half at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez. However, his persistence paid off in the closing stages, when he pounced on Arda Güler’s clever pass and slotted home a precise finish off the post for his 10th league goal of the season.

Manager Xabi Alonso hailed his side’s determination after a tough contest: “Coming here to face Getafe is never easy. It wasn’t the prettiest match, but we did what we had to do.”

Vinicius Junior, introduced in the second half, changed the dynamic with his pace and flair, forcing Getafe’s defenders into desperate tackles. Substitute Allan Nyom saw red less than a minute after coming on for elbowing Vinicius off the ball — a moment that swung the match decisively in Madrid’s favour.

Moments later, Mbappe made Getafe pay. The home side’s frustration deepened when Alex Sancris was also sent off for a second yellow card, reducing them to nine men.

Despite their disadvantage, Getafe almost snatched an equalizer in stoppage time, but Thibaut Courtois denied Abu Kamara’s close-range effort with a superb reflex save.

“We are very happy with how Kylian is performing; he’s being decisive in every game,” Alonso said after the final whistle.

Getafe coach José Bordalás, however, lamented the officiating, arguing that Nyom’s red card was “too harsh” and “changed everything.”

With the victory, Real Madrid stay on top of both the La Liga and Champions League scoring charts through Mbappe’s incredible form. Their focus now shifts to a midweek European clash against Juventus, followed by the highly anticipated El Clásico against Barcelona next weekend.

Elsewhere in La Liga, Elche held Athletic Bilbao to a goalless draw to stay seventh, Rayo Vallecano cruised past Levante 3-0, and Real Sociedad earned a dramatic 1-1 draw against 10-man Celta Vigo to ease pressure on their manager.
