The Kano State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has confirmed a violent mob attack on its outpost in Danmaje, Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area, which resulted in the killing of three suspects and the destruction of the facility.
The incident reportedly occurred late Sunday night, coming less than 24 hours after a similar attack on an NSCDC outpost in neighbouring Katsina State, where three suspects were also lynched.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Kano State NSCDC spokesperson, Ibrahim Abdullahi, said the crisis began around 10:00 pm when residents of the Yansango community brought three unidentified individuals to the Danmaje outpost.
The suspects were allegedly apprehended in an area notorious for motorcycle theft and were handed over to NSCDC officers for investigation. However, the situation reportedly escalated before officers could begin formal inquiries.
According to Abdullahi, a large crowd drawn from Yansango and surrounding communities—including Madinawa, Gagarawa, Limawa, Yankatsari, Danmaje, and Gurjiya—stormed the outpost, demanding that the suspects be released to them for instant punishment.
“The mob insisted that the suspects be handed over for jungle justice,” the spokesperson said.
He added that the crowd eventually overpowered the officers on duty, forcefully entered the facility, and unleashed violence on both the suspects and the outpost.
“They set the office on fire and lynched the three suspects,” Abdullahi disclosed.
Although officers on duty managed to escape the burning building, three NSCDC personnel reportedly sustained varying degrees of injury during the attack.
Reacting to the incident, the Kano State Commandant of the NSCDC, Mohammed Agalama, strongly condemned the mob action and announced the constitution of a committee of inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Agalama reiterated the corps’ commitment to the rule of law and assured the public that appropriate actions would be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
The incident has once again raised alarm over the growing prevalence of mob violence and jungle justice in parts of the country, despite repeated appeals by security agencies for citizens to allow due legal processes to prevail.
