Senator Abba Moro has dismissed speculation suggesting he may leave the Peoples Democratic Party, reaffirming his commitment to the opposition party amid ongoing political realignments.
The Senate Minority Leader made his position known during a consultative session involving the party’s leadership and members of its National Working Committee.
The meeting was presided over by the chairman of the committee, Kabiru Turaki, and served as an opportunity for party leaders to discuss internal developments.
Addressing attendees at the gathering, Moro emphasized that his political loyalty to the PDP remains unwavering despite recent rumours suggesting otherwise.
He insisted that many members within the party remain committed to its ideals and are not seeking to abandon the platform because of political pressure.
According to him, the decision to remain within the PDP is driven by conviction rather than personal ambition.
Moro explained that some politicians stay in parties merely as vehicles for electoral victory, but he maintained that his involvement in the PDP is rooted in long-standing belief in its principles.
The senator also stated that intimidation or external pressure would not force him to change his political affiliation.
In his remarks, he described the PDP as a vital platform for democratic governance in Nigeria.
He urged the newly constituted National Working Committee to focus on rebuilding the party’s internal strength and restoring unity among members.
According to Moro, the successful completion of the party’s national convention has created a new phase of responsibility for the leadership.
He suggested that the NWC now carries the crucial task of guiding the party through a period of recovery and consolidation.
Responding to Moro’s remarks, Turaki reassured party members that the leadership is already implementing measures to reposition the PDP ahead of future elections.
He stressed that the broader objective is to strengthen democratic institutions and protect Nigeria’s multiparty political system.
Turaki added that the upcoming electoral cycle should be viewed as an opportunity to engage Nigerians on governance rather than focusing solely on political defections.
He also commended Moro and other PDP lawmakers in the Senate for their loyalty to the party.
According to him, the commitment demonstrated by these legislators has helped sustain the party during challenging political moments.
Meanwhile, Adolphus Wabara also expressed optimism about the party’s future.
Wabara praised the outcome of the recent national convention held in Ibadan, describing it as a step toward rebuilding confidence within the party.
He assured members that the Board of Trustees would fully support the leadership of the National Working Committee.
The BoT chairman also emphasized the importance of reconciliation and unity among party members across the country.
He encouraged stakeholders to prioritise healing divisions and working collectively to strengthen the party’s structures.
Commentary and Analysis
Abba Moro’s reaffirmation of loyalty highlights the challenges currently facing Nigeria’s opposition parties as they navigate shifting alliances and defections.
In many political systems, periods following major conventions or leadership transitions often become moments of uncertainty, with members reassessing their political alignments.
By publicly declaring his commitment to the PDP, Moro appears to be sending a message aimed at stabilising confidence within the party.
The emphasis on unity and institutional rebuilding by both the National Working Committee and the Board of Trustees suggests that party leaders recognise the importance of cohesion ahead of future elections.
As Nigeria moves closer to the next electoral cycle, the ability of the PDP to maintain internal solidarity and rebuild its organisational structures will likely play a key role in shaping its political prospects.
