Moroccan referee Jalal Jayed has been named to oversee Sunday’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff final between Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Jayed is familiar with the Super Eagles, having previously officiated their March encounter against Rwanda during Matchday Five, which Nigeria won 2-0 in Kigali thanks to a double from Victor Osimhen.

Assisting him on the sidelines will be fellow Moroccans Mustapha Akarkad and Zakaria Bernissi, while Tunisia’s Mahrez El Malki will act as the fourth official. VAR responsibilities will be handled by Algeria’s Lahlou Benbraham and Tunisian official Haitham Guirat.

Meanwhile, the Super Eagles received a significant boost as Wilfred Ndidi was cleared to play in the playoff final.

The midfielder had initially faced suspension after collecting a second yellow card in Nigeria’s victory over Gabon, but the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed his eligibility.

Captain William Troost-Ekong welcomed the news, noting that the team was relieved.

“We are happy that Wilfred can participate tomorrow. The clarification is now out, and there are no issues. We understand how crucial it is for a player on a yellow card to be available, so it’s great to have him in the squad,” Troost-Ekong told Super Eagles media.

Ndidi had impressed in the 4-1 triumph over Gabon, providing the assist for Osimhen’s third goal.

Looking ahead to the final, Troost-Ekong acknowledged the challenging nature of facing DR Congo. Nigeria advanced after a convincing win over Gabon, while Congo shocked Cameroon with a 1-0 victory to secure their spot in Rabat.

“The team is thrilled to be here and competing on Sunday. Motivation isn’t an issue—we all want to reach the World Cup. It will be a tough match. Congo earned their place in the final and we are ready for it,” he said.

He emphasized the need for the squad to be prepared for every challenge Congo may present.

“Each game brings a unique challenge. Against Gabon it was tough—they were dangerous on the counter, which we managed. Congo has quality players I know, and they’re a strong side. This will be a completely different test. They aren’t like other African teams, so we’ll have to adapt,” the captain added.

The decisive match in Rabat will determine which team advances to the intercontinental playoffs. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. on Sunday, November 16.
