Nigeria’s political landscape may soon witness another shift as Caleb Mutfwang prepares to move from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress. Sources within the ruling party suggest the transition is already concluded internally and that an official announcement could come soon.
The planned switch is expected to increase the number of governors aligned with the APC to 26. This would further strengthen the party’s influence across Nigeria’s political map as preparations gradually build toward the 2027 general elections.
According to insiders within the APC’s National Working Committee, Mutfwang has already taken significant steps toward formalizing the move. Reports indicate that he informed party leadership about his decision earlier in the week before meeting with Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The meeting with the president reportedly came after discussions with the party’s national chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda. Interestingly, Yilwatda had previously contested against Mutfwang in the Plateau State governorship race, making his role in facilitating the meeting particularly notable in the evolving political dynamic.
Party insiders say the chairman personally arranged the introduction at Aso Rock Presidential Villa after being informed about the governor’s decision to change political affiliation.
Although the governor had previously reiterated his loyalty to the PDP on several occasions, the recent developments indicate a shift in strategy ahead of future political contests. The defection is expected to be formally announced once party arrangements are completed.
Another Governor Linked to APC
Alongside Mutfwang’s move, another state leader is also being counted among those aligning with the ruling party. Agbu Kefas, who currently governs Taraba State, is reportedly considered part of the APC camp despite not yet being publicly welcomed at an official ceremony.
Party officials explained that Kefas’ formal reception was delayed due to concerns about the prevailing national atmosphere, suggesting that the timing of political announcements is being handled with caution.
Political Implications
If both governors are fully integrated into the party, the APC’s total number of state executives will rise significantly. Such growth would further consolidate the ruling party’s presence across Nigeria’s states and potentially shape alliances heading toward the next election cycle.
Commentary and Analysis
Political defections have long been a defining feature of Nigeria’s party system, often reflecting shifting alliances rather than rigid ideological divisions. Moves like Mutfwang’s highlight the strategic calculations politicians make as elections approach.
Analysts note that strengthening ties with the federal government can sometimes influence governance dynamics within states, particularly in areas involving federal funding, infrastructure collaboration, and political leverage.
However, defections also tend to generate debate among voters and party loyalists who question whether such transitions reflect genuine political conviction or pragmatic positioning ahead of future contests.
As Nigeria moves closer to another election cycle, the decisions of key political figures—including sitting governors—are likely to play a major role in shaping the balance of power among the country’s major parties.
