Renowned Nigerian music producer Spellz has opened up about his memorable studio sessions with some of the country’s biggest music stars — Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy, and Tiwa Savage.

In a recent interview with Punch, Spellz described how each artist brings a unique energy, creativity, and approach to the studio, making every session distinct and inspiring.

“To start with, I think they’re all great artistes. They each bring something different every time,” Spellz said. “Wizkid has always been fun to work with because he knows exactly what he’s looking for just by listening to the beat. That kind of clarity makes the work easier and more enjoyable.”

Speaking about Davido, the producer praised his vibrant personality and technical knowledge:

“Working with Davido in the studio is always energetic. He’s often juggling business calls, but when it’s time for vocal work, he’s top-notch. Earlier in my career, he literally gave me a crash course in sound engineering. Those moments stay with you because they show how much knowledge can be exchanged in the studio.”

On Burna Boy, Spellz recalled their early sessions as “crazy,” describing the Grammy-winning artist’s spontaneous and unconventional creative process.

“My early sessions with Burna Boy used to be crazy because I’d never seen that man write before — neither with a pen nor on his phone. Everything comes straight from his head to the microphone. The way he pieces songs together during a session is like solving a jigsaw puzzle really fast.”

He also spoke warmly about Tiwa Savage, highlighting her discipline and perfectionism in the studio.

“And what’s a Tiwa Savage session without ice cream?” he joked. “Beyond that, Tiwa is a perfectionist. She’ll push you to deliver your best because she always gives her best too.”

Spellz, known for producing hits like “Ma Lo” by Tiwa Savage featuring Wizkid, and “Caro” by Wizkid, continues to be one of Nigeria’s most respected hitmakers — a key figure shaping the sound of Afrobeats both locally and internationally.
