Nigerian rapper and singer Zlatan Ibile has reflected on his humble beginnings in music, revealing how his journey started after failing to gain university admission due to poor grades.
Speaking in an interview with Nandi Madida on Apple Music 1, Zlatan explained that his new album, “Symbol of Hope,” is inspired by his desire to motivate people from tough backgrounds to keep pursuing their dreams.
“I used to listen to music before I even thought of making it,” Zlatan said. “I admired many artists whose lives changed from nothing to something. Now, being in this position, I see how my songs inspire others not to give up. People send me messages saying my music keeps them going. That’s why I titled the album Symbol of Hope — to show that if I can do it, anyone can.”
The rapper recounted how his music journey began in 2011 after he failed his Mathematics and Accounting exams.
“I was supposed to enter university in 2011 or 2012, but I didn’t have all my papers. My dad is a pastor, and I played drums in church. I never imagined being an artist. After failing my exam, I started going to the studio with a friend. The first song I recorded was rubbish, but when my siblings heard it, they hyped me like I was Jay-Z,” he said with a laugh.
Encouraged by his family and friends, Zlatan continued making music, and his big break came during his first semester at university when he won a local rap competition.
“Out of 140 contestants, I won a car. I was only 19, just three weeks into school. That was when I realized music could change my life. I started writing every day and night after that,” he recalled.
Zlatan also spoke about creating his viral dance, Zanku (Zlatan Abeg No Kill Us), which became a global sensation.
“That’s Africa to the world,” he said proudly. “The best part is, I attached my name to it. You can’t mention Zanku without mentioning Zlatan. I always wanted to have my own dance, and when it went viral, it felt unreal.”
Through setbacks and perseverance, Zlatan Ibile has transformed his struggles into inspiration, using his platform to spread hope and positivity.
