The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has announced that it has launched an investigation into reports that civilians were killed during a military airstrike in the Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State.

In a statement on Wednesday, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information (DOPRI), said the probe will be conducted by the service’s Civilian Harm Accident and Investigation (CHAI) team.

Ejodame reaffirmed NAF’s commitment to accountability and to implementing corrective measures whenever necessary.

Gossip News Now reports that at least two civilians were reportedly killed, while several others sustained gunshot injuries, during the aerial attack on the Kurgi community in Mariga.

Acknowledging the seriousness of the incident, Ejodame expressed deep concern for all affected and stressed that protecting civilians remains central to the Air Force’s operations.

“Over the past year, the NAF has consistently implemented its Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response – Action Plan (CHMR-AP), integrating civilian protection into every phase of operations while enhancing training, procedures, and safeguards to minimise harm,” he said.

He added, “In line with this commitment, the NAF has activated the Civilian Harm Accident and Investigation (CHAI) team to conduct an immediate and thorough investigation into the reported incident.”

The NAF spokesperson also emphasised the service’s dedication to accountability, responsibility, and transparency.

“Where required, we are always prepared to take responsibility, implement necessary improvements, and safeguard innocent lives, all while defending the nation with professionalism, restraint, and respect for the trust the Nigerian people place in us,” Ejodame stated.
