The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has declared that it will resume industrial action beginning January 12, 2026, following what it described as the government’s failure to meet its outstanding demands.
The resolution was reached after an emergency National Executive Council (E-NEC) meeting held on January 2. In a statement signed by NARD President, Muhammad Suleiman, the association confirmed that the strike would officially commence at 12:00 a.m. on Monday, January 12.
According to the statement, the action forms part of the ongoing TICS 2.0 struggle, which the association insists will not be suspended unless its minimum conditions are fully satisfied. NARD listed nine core demands that must be addressed before any reconsideration of the strike.
Among the key issues raised are the reinstatement of five doctors at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja; settlement of promotion and salary arrears; implementation of the professional allowance table with arrears captured in the 2026 budget; restoration of the specialist allowance; payment of outstanding salaries owed to house officers; clarification from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare regarding skipping and entry-level matters; and the continuation and completion of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) negotiations.
To mobilize support and create public awareness, the NEC directed all 91 NARD centres nationwide to convene congress meetings and organize press briefings. The association emphasized the need for widespread visibility, stating its intention to hold 91 press conferences within seven days.
NARD also unveiled a phased protest plan. Activities will begin with centre-based demonstrations from January 12 to 16, followed by regionally coordinated protests led by caucus leaders. A nationwide protest spearheaded by the National Officers’ Committee (NOC) will conclude the sequence of actions.
The association explained that the one-week notice before the strike is designed to allow for consultations, media engagement, and formal notifications to relevant authorities, including security agencies such as the DSS, the police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, as well as hospital managements.
Reaffirming its commitment, the NOC expressed appreciation for the guidance provided by the NEC and assured members that efforts to push for the full implementation of their demands would intensify in the days ahead.
