Neymar Extends Santos Contract Until 2026, Aiming For World Cup Comeback

Santos FC has secured a major boost with Neymar signing an extension that keeps him at the club through the end of 2026. The 33-year-old forward, who returned to his childhood team in January 2025 after a spell disrupted by injuries, is aiming to re-establish himself in the Brazil national team ahead of the upcoming World Cup.

The move comes after a challenging period for Neymar, who has not appeared for the national side since 2023 due to persistent fitness issues. By recommitting to Santos, he signals a clear intention to regain form and impress Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti.

Last season, Neymar demonstrated resilience, playing through pain in crucial matches that helped Santos avoid relegation from Brazil’s top division. He netted five goals in the club’s final five games, a remarkable run that ensured their continued presence in the top flight.

Following the campaign, Neymar underwent left knee surgery to repair a damaged meniscus, a step considered essential for his World Cup ambitions. “Santos is my place, I’m at home,” Neymar said in a club video, adding, “It’s with you that I want to achieve the dreams that are still missing.”

Ancelotti has stressed that only full fitness will guarantee Neymar’s return to the Seleção, emphasizing that even his record as Brazil’s all-time leading scorer—79 goals—cannot override current physical readiness.

Injuries have been a recurring challenge in recent years. After rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in October 2023, Neymar was sidelined for a year and then faced further muscle injuries that kept him out of the national team.

Brazil, preparing for their sixth World Cup triumph attempt, will compete in Group C against Scotland, Morocco, and Haiti when the tournament begins on 11 June across Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Neymar’s determination to play a pivotal role will be closely watched as the countdown to the global event continues.
