The Federal Government of Nigeria has confirmed that it maintains active security and intelligence collaboration with the United States following recent airstrikes carried out against terrorist hideouts in the country’s North-West region.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Nigeria continues to work closely with international allies, including the United States, through established frameworks aimed at combating terrorism and violent extremism.
The confirmation follows reports that the United States conducted a series of air operations targeting Islamic State (ISIS) elements operating in parts of North-West Nigeria. Former US President Donald Trump had announced the strikes, stating that the militants targeted were linked to attacks that claimed numerous civilian lives, particularly among Christian communities.
According to the ministry, intelligence cooperation between Nigeria and its partners has played a key role in enabling targeted and precise operations against terrorist networks in the region.
The government explained that the collaboration is in line with international norms and bilateral agreements, encompassing intelligence sharing, strategic coordination, and other forms of security assistance.
It emphasized that all joint efforts are carried out with full respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty, adherence to international law, and a shared commitment to maintaining regional and global security.
The ministry reiterated that the protection of civilians remains central to Nigeria’s counter-terrorism strategy, alongside the preservation of national unity and the protection of citizens’ rights regardless of religion or ethnic background.
It stressed that acts of terrorism are unacceptable in any form and condemned violence directed at any group or community.
“Nigeria maintains that terrorist violence, whether against Christians, Muslims, or any other group, contradicts the nation’s core values and poses a serious threat to international peace and security,” the statement noted.
The Federal Government added that it will continue to engage with global partners through diplomatic and security channels to dismantle terrorist networks, disrupt their funding and supply routes, and curb cross-border threats.
The ministry also assured Nigerians that efforts are ongoing to strengthen domestic security agencies and intelligence capabilities, pledging to keep the public informed through official communication channels.
