Both Nigeria and Benin Republic will be without key players when they face off in Tuesday’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match in Uyo, as suspensions have ruled out several important names on both sides.
Benin head coach Gernot Rohr confirmed that midfielder Sessi d’Almeida and defender Yohan Roche will miss the encounter after receiving their second yellow cards during the Cheetahs’ 1-0 victory over Rwanda last week.
Speaking to journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, Rohr acknowledged the setback but expressed confidence in his squad’s ability to handle the pressure.
“We have lost two players because of a second yellow card,” Rohr said. “But everything is still possible for the three teams — South Africa, Benin, and Nigeria. The decision is in our hands. There will be suspense right until the end.”
On the Nigerian side, Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman will be unavailable after receiving his second yellow card of the qualifiers in the 64th minute of Friday’s 2-1 win over Lesotho. Under CAF disciplinary regulations, the winger must serve a one-match suspension.
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle downplayed the impact of Lookman’s absence, stressing that his team possesses the depth and determination to rise to the occasion.
“The team remains focused and confident. Lookman’s suspension is unfortunate, but we have enough quality to compete effectively,” Chelle told reporters. “Every player must be mentally ready to make a contribution, whether as a starter or from the bench.”
Chelle added that Lookman’s leadership will still resonate within the camp, noting that the forward will continue to motivate his teammates from the sidelines as Nigeria push to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
Following a brief flight delay on Saturday, the Super Eagles have now settled in Uyo to finalize preparations for the high-stakes encounter.
Nigeria currently sit third in Group C, trailing both Benin Republic and South Africa, making Tuesday’s clash a must-win if they are to stay in contention for an automatic spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
