NNPP Appeals to Governor Yusuf, Urges Him to Reject APC Defection

Amid speculation about possible political realignments in Kano, the state chapter of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has appealed to Abba Kabir Yusuf to remain loyal to the party and resist pressure to move to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The appeal was made during a press briefing in Kano by the party’s state chairman, Suleiman Dungurawa, who addressed reports suggesting that political forces were attempting to persuade the governor to change parties.

Party Denies Rift Between Key Leaders

Dungurawa rejected claims that internal tensions exist between Governor Yusuf and the NNPP’s national leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

According to him, rumours suggesting that the two leaders are drifting apart are unfounded and are being promoted by individuals seeking to destabilize the party’s structure in the state.

He insisted that Kwankwaso does not support the political manoeuvres currently circulating in discussions about possible defections.

Message to Party Members

During the briefing, the NNPP leadership warned members not to be influenced by documents or campaigns encouraging them to align with the APC.

The chairman specifically cautioned supporters against attaching their names to any petitions or declarations that could be used to justify a mass defection from the party.

He emphasized that loyalty to the party and its leadership remains essential during periods of political uncertainty.

Appeal to Kano Residents

Beyond addressing party members, the NNPP also spoke directly to the wider public in Kano State.

Dungurawa urged residents to remain calm and continue their daily activities without being distracted by political speculation or rumours circulating in the media.

According to him, the party remains focused on governance and stability in the state.

Party Position on Defection

The NNPP leadership reiterated that both its national and state structures oppose any move that would see the governor or party members join the APC.

Party officials argued that their organization still enjoys strong public support and therefore has no reason to abandon its political platform.

They also insisted that the party’s leadership remains united behind its political direction and strategy.

Commentary and Analysis

Political speculation about party defections is a recurring feature of Nigerian politics, especially when influential figures are involved.

In Kano, the relationship between Governor Yusuf and Rabiu Kwankwaso is widely seen as central to the NNPP’s strength in the state. Any perceived shift in that alliance would likely attract significant political attention.

The NNPP’s public appeal reflects an effort to preserve unity and prevent internal fractures that could weaken its position. Observers note that maintaining cohesion within the party will be crucial as political activities gradually intensify ahead of future election cycles.
