The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has announced a nationwide effort to recruit politicians it describes as credible, capable, and committed to integrity as preparations gradually begin for the 2027 general elections.

The announcement was made in Lagos by the party’s founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Boniface Aniebonam, who said the initiative is aimed at strengthening the party’s base and attracting individuals with strong reputations for responsible leadership.

According to the statement, party leaders across the country have been instructed to immediately begin a fresh membership registration exercise. In addition to welcoming new members, state executives are also expected to update the party’s existing membership records.

Aniebonam explained that the recruitment campaign is not simply about increasing numbers but about bringing in individuals with proven character and a commitment to ethical leadership.

Focus on Character and Credibility

The NNPP leadership emphasized that the party wants members who can demonstrate honesty and accountability in public service.

Party officials believe that building a political platform rooted in integrity will help position the NNPP as a credible alternative in Nigeria’s political landscape.

To ensure this goal is achieved, the party is encouraging state branches to carefully assess the track record of individuals seeking to join the organization.

Impact of the Kwankwaso Dispute

The party also addressed its long-standing internal dispute involving the Kwankwasiya Movement, which is associated with Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.

According to Aniebonam, the disagreement between the NNPP leadership and the movement had created significant distractions for the party. The conflict reportedly led to court cases and internal tensions that affected the party’s activities in recent electoral cycles.

However, he suggested that the situation is gradually being resolved, allowing the party to refocus on its broader mission of promoting good governance.

Party Values and Membership Expectations

While discussing the direction of the party, Aniebonam stated that individuals who feel uncomfortable with the NNPP’s principles are free to leave and pursue their political ambitions elsewhere.

At the same time, he expressed appreciation to those who previously left the party, wishing them success in their future political journeys.

The NNPP founder also encouraged members to embrace forgiveness and unity as the party moves forward from past disagreements.

Clarification on the Kwankwasiya Movement

Aniebonam took the opportunity to address confusion surrounding the relationship between the NNPP and the Kwankwasiya Movement.

He explained that the two entities have distinct identities, including different symbols used for political representation.

To clarify the distinction, he pointed out the following differences:

  • NNPP’s official symbol: a basket of fruits displayed in green and white
  • Kwankwasiya Movement symbol: a red book
  • Electoral regulations: prevent two separate parties from operating with the same name but different logos

The clarification was intended to prevent political misunderstandings and ensure that party branding remains consistent with electoral guidelines.

Options for Kwankwaso and His Supporters

The NNPP leadership also stated that Kwankwaso and members of his political movement are free to pursue other political opportunities if they choose.

Among the options mentioned was joining another registered political party or reviving the Nigeria Alliance Party (NAP), a platform that had previously been deregistered.

According to Aniebonam, the NNPP holds no personal hostility toward Kwankwaso or his allies despite the past disagreements.

Commentary and Analysis

The NNPP’s latest announcement reflects a strategic effort to rebuild and expand the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

By focusing on recruiting politicians with credible reputations, the party appears to be positioning itself as a platform that prioritizes ethical leadership and accountability.

The attempt to move beyond internal conflicts also suggests that the party recognizes the need for unity and stability as it prepares for future political contests.

At the same time, the clarification regarding the Kwankwasiya Movement highlights how internal divisions can shape the direction of political parties in Nigeria. Managing such disputes while maintaining a clear party identity will likely remain a major task for the NNPP leadership.

If the party succeeds in attracting respected figures and strengthening its national structure, it could improve its competitiveness in the next electoral cycle. However, the effectiveness of this strategy will depend largely on how well the recruitment drive translates into grassroots support and political influence.
