NNPP Refutes Claims That Kwankwaso Endorsed Gov. Yusuf’s Alleged Move to APC (Rewritten)

Speculation surrounding the political future of Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has intensified in recent days, following widespread claims that he may be considering a move from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The rumours gained further traction when reports surfaced suggesting that the NNPP’s national leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, had allegedly endorsed such a transition.

The reports portrayed a dramatic shift in Kwankwaso’s long-held opposition to defections within the NNPP. According to the circulating narrative, he had not only softened his stance but had also approved the possible departure of high-profile figures, including Governor Yusuf. This suggestion quickly stirred debate within political circles, particularly given Kwankwaso’s reputation for party discipline and ideological consistency.

Reacting swiftly, NNPP spokesperson Ladipo Johnson issued a firm rebuttal. In a strongly worded statement, he described the allegations as entirely unfounded and deliberately misleading. He characterised the claims as a calculated attempt to misrepresent Kwankwaso’s position and destabilise the party’s image.

Johnson did not mince words, branding the rumour “a blatant and shameful fabrication.” He argued that those behind the story were twisting facts to serve narrow political objectives. According to him, there has been no approval, tacit or explicit, from Kwankwaso regarding any planned defection.

Beyond denying the claims, the NNPP spokesman addressed individuals reportedly contemplating an exit from the party. He maintained that anyone determined to leave should do so transparently rather than invoking the name of the party’s leader to legitimise their decision. In his view, political ambition should not be cloaked in false endorsements.

He further emphasised that Kwankwaso’s political integrity should not be dragged into speculative narratives. Suggesting that the former Kano governor had authorised such moves, Johnson said, was both mischievous and disrespectful.

Political Analysis and Context

The situation underscores the volatility of party politics in Nigeria, where defections frequently reshape alliances ahead of major elections. Rumours of cross-party negotiations often surface during periods of strategic recalibration, especially when influential figures are involved.

Kwankwaso’s perceived ideological firmness makes the allegation particularly sensitive. As a prominent national figure and leader within the NNPP, any suggestion of his backing for defections could significantly impact party cohesion. It is therefore unsurprising that the party moved quickly to counter the narrative.

At the same time, persistent speculation about Governor Yusuf’s political trajectory reflects broader uncertainties within opposition parties navigating Nigeria’s competitive political landscape. Whether these rumours signal genuine internal tensions or are simply strategic misinformation remains to be seen.

For now, the NNPP’s official stance is unequivocal: there has been no endorsement from Kwankwaso regarding any move to the APC. The party appears intent on reinforcing unity while distancing itself from what it describes as politically motivated falsehoods.
