NNPP Warns Gov Yusuf: Defection Without Resignation Could Have Consequences

The Kano State chapter of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has emphasised that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf must follow due process before leaving the party.

Speaking at a press conference in Kano on Tuesday, the State Chairman of the NNPP, Senator Elmasud Doguwa, stated that the governor is free to leave the party, but only after formally resigning in accordance with party rules.

Doguwa clarified that the party has no intention of forcibly keeping Governor Yusuf if he chooses to pursue another political platform. However, he stressed that the governor must notify the legally recognised NNPP in writing before joining any other party.

The statement comes amid growing speculation that Governor Yusuf, elected on the NNPP platform in 2023, may be planning to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf remains a bona fide member of the NNPP, the party with a basket of fruits as its logo. We respect him as both our governor and party member,” Doguwa said. “However, if he chooses to leave, he has the legal right to do so. What we insist on is that he must formally tender his resignation, which we have not yet received.”

He emphasised that membership of a political party is a personal choice, but added that any such decision must comply with established party rules and regulations.

Doguwa further warned that bypassing the formal resignation process could have legal ramifications, especially in light of ongoing litigation regarding the party’s leadership.

“With the judgments already delivered by three courts, if Governor Yusuf defects without formally resigning through the bona fide NNPP, it may not go without consequences should the Supreme Court eventually rule in our favour,” he said.

He reaffirmed that the current NNPP leadership in Kano is the legitimate authority based on existing court rulings and called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to respect and enforce those judgments.

“We are urging INEC to comply with all court rulings delivered last year concerning this matter,” Doguwa added.
