The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, has dismissed suggestions that the federation played any role in influencing the selection of the Super Eagles squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
His response comes after speculation began circulating following the release of Nigeria’s final squad list for the competition.
Squad Finalised by Coaching Staff
Earlier in December, Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle announced the final list of players who will represent Nigeria at the continental tournament.
The coach initially worked with a provisional list of 54 players, which was later trimmed down to 28 names after the technical team completed its evaluation process.
Shortly after the announcement, debates emerged among fans and analysts regarding whether external pressure might have influenced the final choices.
Gusau Responds to Growing Speculation
Addressing the controversy, Gusau firmly rejected claims that the NFF directed the coach on which players should be selected.
During a radio discussion with former Nigerian international Segun Odegbami on Eagle 102.5 FM, the NFF president warned commentators and social media users to avoid making allegations without evidence.
He argued that misinformation can easily spread online, especially in an environment where agents and other interested parties may attempt to influence public opinion.
Federation Maintains Distance From Technical Decisions
Gusau stressed that player selection remains the exclusive responsibility of the national team’s technical crew.
He explained that the football federation deliberately avoids interfering with coaching decisions in order to protect the independence of the team’s management.
According to him, maintaining a clear boundary between administrative leadership and technical operations helps ensure that coaches can work without unnecessary pressure.
Personal Approach to Avoiding Distractions
The NFF president also revealed that he has taken deliberate steps to avoid interfering with the team environment.
He explained that since assuming office, he has avoided staying in the same hotel as the national team during major assignments.
This approach, he said, is meant to prevent any perception that the federation leadership is attempting to influence decisions made by the coaching staff.
Selection Process in Nigerian Football
In most national teams around the world, the process of selecting players for international tournaments typically involves several stages of evaluation.
The coaching staff usually:
- Reviews player performance at club level
- Assesses fitness and tactical suitability
- Considers team balance across all positions
After these evaluations, the coach then produces a provisional squad before finalizing the list of players who will represent the country.
Commentary and Analysis
The debate surrounding the Super Eagles squad selection reflects the intense interest Nigerians have in the national football team.
Whenever a major tournament approaches, discussions about player inclusion or omission often dominate sports conversations across the country.
While administrative interference has historically been a concern in some football systems, Gusau’s statement aims to reassure supporters that the technical team currently operates independently.
Ultimately, the performance of the squad during AFCON will likely determine whether the selection decisions made by the coaching staff are viewed as successful.
For now, the NFF leadership appears determined to present a united front behind the technical team as Nigeria prepares for another continental challenge.
