The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has made it clear that he will actively oppose any attempt by Siminalayi Fubara to secure another term as governor of Rivers State in the 2027 elections. His remarks signal a deepening political divide between the two leaders, once considered allies.

Speaking during a visit to Ahoada West Local Government Area, Wike insisted that no individual or group has the authority to influence his decisions on political matters involving Rivers State. He emphasized his independence, declaring that he would not accept directives from anyone regarding the future political leadership of the state.

He also expressed frustration over what he described as repeated breaches of mutual understandings reached in the past. According to him, agreements that were meant to ensure stability and cooperation were disregarded more than once, and he stressed that such experiences had shaped his resolve moving forward. He made it known that he would not allow similar situations to occur again.

Wike clarified that his stance is not driven by personal ambition or dissatisfaction with his current federal role. Instead, he said his position is rooted in his commitment to protecting the political strength and influence of Rivers State. He noted that he remains satisfied serving as FCT Minister but believes strongly in defending the interests and dignity of his home state.

Reflecting on his years as governor, Wike recalled a period when Rivers State maintained strong influence on national affairs. He pointed out that his administration ensured the state’s voice was heard and respected across Nigeria, even in situations that required confronting federal authorities. He suggested that Rivers once demonstrated political courage and unity, which contributed to its prominence.

He also questioned why certain political actors now speak strongly about defending their mandate when, in his view, they did not show the same level of determination at crucial moments in the past. Reinforcing his position, Wike stated unequivocally that no one has the power to compel him to act against his convictions, emphasizing that his decisions will always be guided by what he considers best for Rivers State.
