Abia State Governor Alex Otti has confirmed that he remains a member of the Labour Party (LP), dismissing rumours about a possible defection despite recent political shifts among opposition governors.
The governor spoke on Thursday during his monthly media briefing at the Government House in Umuahia, addressing questions about internal disputes within the Labour Party. He emphasised that he and his supporters continue to recognise and support the party’s legally recognised leadership.
Otti referenced recent court rulings that affirmed the expiry of Julius Abure’s tenure and instructed adherence to judicial decisions. He stressed that respecting the courts is essential to maintaining the integrity of Nigeria’s judiciary.
While reaffirming his current commitment to the Labour Party, the governor acknowledged that political landscapes can evolve. He highlighted that Nigeria is not yet in an election period, and when the 2027 elections arrive, he intends to contest under the Labour Party banner. “Nobody knows tomorrow,” Otti said. “But today, I am still in the Labour Party.”
His statements come amid heightened political activity nationwide, following the defection of two governors to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and growing speculation about further party shifts ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Otti’s faction, aligned with former minister Nenadi Usman, recently achieved a legal victory at the Federal High Court in Abuja. Justice Peter Lifu ruled that the Usman-led national caretaker committee represents the legitimate leadership of the Labour Party and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the group officially.
Meanwhile, the rival Julius Abure-led faction, central to the internal dispute, has rejected the court’s decision and announced plans to appeal the ruling at a higher court.
