The Palace of the Oba of Benin has formally distanced itself from the recent assault on media personality Don Pedro Obaseki, which followed comments he made at a UK event reportedly hosted by former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Frank Irabor, Secretary of the Benin Traditional Council (BTC), emphasized that the attack was not authorised by His Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II.
“The unfortunate incident in which Pedro Obaseki was manhandled was not authorised by the Oba of Benin. It cannot be authorised because such actions are entirely inconsistent with the character of our revered monarch. The Oba of Benin is a peace-loving father to all,” the statement read.
The council further cautioned youths against taking the law into their own hands, urging them to respect legal processes and allow security agencies to address disputes.
“The Benin Traditional Council advises our youth not to take the law into their hands under any circumstances, regardless of provocation,” the statement added.
Social media users were also urged to verify information before sharing, to prevent the spread of misinformation.
“Users of social media should make every effort to cross-check facts before posting,” the BTC stated.
The Oba of Benin also took the opportunity to extend New Year greetings to the public, reiterating his commitment to peace, unity, and harmonious coexistence.
