Former Super Eagles midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has called on Nigeria’s national team to remain focused, disciplined, and mentally strong as they prepare for next month’s decisive 2026 World Cup qualifying playoff against Gabon.

According to Gossip News Now, Nigeria reignited their qualification hopes with a dominant 4-0 victory over Benin Republic in Uyo on Tuesday. The win lifted Eric Chelle’s side to second place in Group C with 17 points, keeping their World Cup dreams alive after a difficult start to the campaign.

The Super Eagles will now face Gabon in a two-legged playoff, with the first leg scheduled for November 13 in Morocco. A win over Gabon would set up a final showdown against either Cameroon or DR Congo, with the winner advancing to the intercontinental playoffs in Mexico, March 2026.

Speaking ahead of the clash, Onazi warned that Gabon cannot be underestimated, noting their impressive performance in the qualifying rounds.

“It will not be an easy game because Gabon had an almost flawless qualification campaign,” Onazi told Footy-Africa.
“We must approach the match carefully. Football has evolved, and Gabon will be a tough side. I believe we can beat them, but the players must treat it like a World Cup or AFCON final.”

Gabon finished second in their qualifying group and are currently ranked 77th in the world. Their squad boasts experienced stars such as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Denis Bouanga, and Mario Lemina, who have been crucial to their recent success.

Onazi, who was part of Nigeria’s 2013 AFCON-winning team, stressed that mental toughness and unity will be key to overcoming Gabon. He urged the players to remain hungry and avoid complacency following their recent victory.

“Games like this are won not just with skill but with the right mindset,” he said.
“Every player must understand what is at stake. The World Cup is every footballer’s dream. If they play with that mentality, qualification will not be far-fetched.”

The 31-year-old added that he is confident Nigeria has regained its rhythm at the perfect time. He praised the players’ renewed passion and determination, saying it has restored belief among fans.

“I believe the team will qualify,” Onazi concluded. “Despite the early setbacks, the squad now looks more united and confident. The players understand what it means to play at the World Cup, and that commitment will see them through.”
