Former Super Eagles midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has raised alarms about the dangers of drunk driving in Lagos, sharing a harrowing experience that could have ended tragically.
Onazi recounted the incident on Instagram, revealing that two intoxicated drivers narrowly missed causing a serious accident the previous night. The 33-year-old, who was part of Nigeria’s AFCON-winning squad, used the moment to appeal for stronger government intervention.
“The government needs to act on drunk driving in Lagos,” Onazi wrote. “I almost lost my life last night because of two drunk guys in a car.” He emphasized that urgent action is required, warning that repeated negligence threatens countless innocent lives.
The midfielder specifically called on agencies such as the Federal Road Safety Corps to step up enforcement and introduce stricter penalties for offenders, arguing that current measures are insufficient to deter reckless behaviour on the roads.
Onazi’s career has seen him represent Nigeria on football’s biggest stages. He played in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and was a key figure in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, featuring in all four matches before the Super Eagles were eliminated in the round of 16 by France.
He was also selected for the 2018 World Cup in Russia but had to miss out due to injury, highlighting the ups and downs of his international career.
Reflecting on his near-miss, Onazi stressed that incidents like this are preventable and called for public awareness campaigns alongside stricter regulation. He noted that the lives of everyday commuters are at stake if no decisive steps are taken to tackle drunk driving.
