The governments of Ogun and Lagos states have officially confirmed that British-Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua was involved in a fatal road accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Monday.

In a joint statement, both state authorities disclosed that the vehicle transporting the two-time unified world heavyweight champion and three members of his entourage collided with a stationary truck, leading to the death of two individuals.

The confirmation was contained in a statement jointly signed by the Special Adviser on Information to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Kayode Akinmade, and the Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso.

According to the statement, the accident occurred earlier in the day along the busy expressway and involved a four-man team travelling in a single vehicle that crashed into a parked truck.

Following the collision, Anthony Joshua and another passenger were swiftly evacuated to a specialised medical facility in Lagos for treatment.

The statement further revealed that medical professionals carried out multiple clinical assessments on both individuals and confirmed that their conditions were stable.

“Doctors have conducted several clinical assessments and have confirmed that both patients are stable and do not require any emergency medical intervention at this time,” the statement said.

The two state governments added that a comprehensive medical team has been put in place to closely monitor the patients and ensure their continued recovery.

Providing an update on Joshua’s condition, officials disclosed that the boxer has remained in contact with his family and is responding well since the incident.

Authorities also assured the public that both Ogun and Lagos states are closely supervising the situation to guarantee that the injured persons receive optimal medical care.

Expressing condolences, the governments sympathised with the families of those who lost their lives in the tragic accident.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the families of the deceased and pray that God grants them strength during this difficult period,” the statement read.

The joint statement also confirmed that investigations have commenced to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

While appreciating the outpouring of public concern, the governments appealed for privacy for Anthony Joshua and his family as inquiries continue.

“We appreciate the concern shown by members of the public and respectfully request privacy for Anthony Joshua and his family at this time,” the statement concluded.
