Ohuabunwa Says INEC Recognition of Damagum-Led PDP Is a Misunderstanding

Amid the lingering leadership tussle within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mao Ohuabunwa has insisted that the faction he leads within the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) is both valid and constitutionally grounded.

His remarks come as internal disagreements continue to divide the party, with competing groups laying claim to authority and direction.

According to Gossip News Now, Ohuabunwa attributed the emergence of his faction to what he described as partiality within the BoT, alleging that the camp led by Adolphus Wabara had aligned itself with one side of the crisis.

He maintained that this perceived bias created a vacuum that his group stepped in to address, positioning themselves as a corrective force within the party.

Offering further insight, the former senator explained that the current situation reflects a broader structural breakdown, noting that parallel leadership structures have emerged at the national level.

He suggested that this unusual development forced the BoT—traditionally regarded as the moral compass of the PDP—to take decisive action.

Reframing his argument, Ohuabunwa stressed that his faction was not created arbitrarily but was instead assembled in line with the party’s constitutional provisions.

He hinted that although not all members have joined his camp yet, more stakeholders may align with them over time as their intentions become clearer.

On the issue of recognition by the Independent National Electoral Commission, Ohuabunwa dismissed the significance of the endorsement given to the Umar Damagum-led faction.

He argued that the recognition was based on earlier communications and should not be interpreted as a final or binding position on the current leadership dispute.

He further clarified the situation by explaining that correspondence previously submitted to INEC had influenced its stance, making the development more procedural than political.

In his words, the acknowledgment predates the formation of his faction and should not be seen as a rejection of their legitimacy.

Rather than deny the existence of divisions, Ohuabunwa openly admitted that the PDP is currently fragmented but framed his group’s role as one of restoration.

He emphasized their commitment to rebuilding internal discipline, strengthening unity, and steering the party back to its foundational principles.

Commentary & Analysis

The ongoing PDP crisis illustrates the challenges political parties face when internal governance structures weaken or fail to act decisively.

Ohuabunwa’s stance reflects a broader struggle over authority, legitimacy, and interpretation of party rules, which are common in periods of political transition.

His framing of the BoT as the “conscience” of the party suggests an attempt to reclaim moral authority, even amid institutional fragmentation.

At the same time, the dispute over INEC’s recognition highlights how external validation can influence internal party dynamics, sometimes deepening divisions rather than resolving them.

Ultimately, the situation points to a critical moment for the PDP, where reconciliation and clarity of leadership will determine its future political strength.
