Olaiya Igwe Reveals Regret Over Refusing To Lend Tope Alabi His Car For Her Wedding

Veteran Nollywood actor Ebun Oloyede, widely known as Olaiya Igwe, has shared what he considers one of the most painful personal decisions of his life — declining to give gospel singer Tope Alabi his car for her wedding after first agreeing to help. The actor made the emotional revelation while speaking at the singer’s 55th birthday celebration, where he reflected on the incident with visible regret.

The story dates back to a period when Olaiya had just acquired a Mercedes-Benz V-Boot, a vehicle he deeply cherished at the time. Fresh from the success of one of his movies, he had even given the car a special identity, proudly calling it “Ololade Mr Money 1.” For him, the automobile was not just a means of transport, but a symbol of achievement and progress in his career.

When Tope Alabi reportedly approached him to request the car for use during her wedding, he initially agreed to the arrangement. However, as the big day drew closer, fear took over and changed his mind. Instead of honouring the promise, he withdrew and began avoiding her calls on the eve of the ceremony.

Olaiya explained that his decision was strongly influenced by a frightening experience he had recently gone through with the same vehicle. At the time, the car had been stolen while he was in Ibadan promoting a movie. Although it was eventually recovered, the incident left him deeply shaken and overly cautious about allowing the vehicle out of his sight again.

Recalling the moment, he admitted that panic, not hatred, drove his action. Gossip News Now reports that the actor said he became too afraid of losing the newly acquired car and chose self-protection over generosity, a choice he now wishes he had handled differently.

Over the years, that moment has remained with him as a source of lingering regret. He revealed that he has since sought forgiveness from Tope Alabi, acknowledging that what seemed like a protective decision then later became a burden on his conscience. His reflection carried an undertone of humility, especially as he compared their present circumstances.

The actor noted that life has moved on in dramatic ways since that incident. According to him, Tope Alabi today enjoys the blessing of owning several luxury vehicles, while he himself is no longer in a position to easily afford a car of that same class. That contrast appears to have deepened his reflection on how temporary material possessions can be and how lasting the consequences of certain decisions may become.

His remarks also carried advice for younger entertainers and public figures. He urged them to think carefully before acting out of fear or impulse, warning that some choices may leave emotional scars that last much longer than expected. In his view, wisdom is not only about protecting what one owns, but also about understanding when kindness matters more.

The emotional recollection came during a joyful moment in Tope Alabi’s life, as the celebrated gospel singer recently marked her 55th birthday. The occasion was made even more memorable with the presentation of a Lexus SUV from her husband, Soji Alabi, adding another touching highlight to the celebration.

Commentary and Analysis

Olaiya Igwe’s confession stands out because it goes beyond celebrity gist and touches on a very human reality — fear can sometimes push people into choices they later regret. His story is relatable because it shows how past trauma can shape present behavior, even when the person involved has no bad intentions.

It also highlights the irony of life. A car once considered too precious to lend eventually became less important than the emotional weight attached to the decision. In sharing this story publicly, Olaiya did more than revisit the past; he turned it into a lesson about humility, relationships, and the importance of acting with courage instead of fear when trust is placed in us.
