Onanuga Slams PDP Chairman for ‘High Treason’ After Calling on Trump Amid Party Crisis

Political tensions within Nigeria’s opposition camp escalated after a senior government official condemned a statement made by a newly positioned leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The controversy began when the party’s acting chairman, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, addressed journalists in Abuja and urged international actors, including former United States President Donald Trump, to pay attention to developments in Nigeria’s political environment.

The incident unfolded at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja, where rival groups within the party had been locked in a confrontation over leadership and control of the organisation. Supporters from different camps reportedly gathered at Wadata Plaza, creating a tense atmosphere that eventually required the presence of security personnel before the situation stabilised.

After gaining access to the party headquarters following the standoff, Turaki held a press briefing where he spoke about what he described as a serious threat to democratic institutions in Nigeria. He argued that the unfolding crisis within the PDP was not merely a party disagreement but part of a broader political challenge facing the country.

During his remarks, Turaki made an unusual appeal to international leaders. He suggested that global powers should pay closer attention to Nigeria’s political climate and intervene to protect democratic governance. According to his statement, democracy in the country was under pressure and required urgent attention from the international community.

In one of the most controversial portions of his address, the PDP figure urged the former U.S. president to step in. He argued that the situation extended beyond domestic politics and implied that external support might be necessary to safeguard Nigeria’s democratic structure.

However, the comment immediately sparked criticism from within the federal government. Presidential adviser on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, reacted sharply after watching a circulating video of Turaki’s remarks.

Onanuga characterised the statement as highly irresponsible and dangerous, warning that inviting foreign influence into Nigeria’s internal affairs crossed a red line. According to him, no political disagreement within a party should lead to calls for outside intervention in the nation’s sovereignty.

Gossip News Now reports that the presidential aide went further to label the statement as an act that borders on “high treason.” In his reaction shared online, Onanuga said Nigerians should remember the moment when a political actor allegedly sought external involvement over what he described as an internal party dispute.

He emphasised that Nigeria’s democratic institutions must be protected through domestic mechanisms and political dialogue rather than appeals to foreign governments. For him, the suggestion that an outside power could step in to resolve local political disagreements undermines the country’s independence.

The adviser’s criticism reflects a broader sensitivity within Nigeria’s political class regarding sovereignty and foreign involvement. Historically, political leaders across party lines have resisted international interference in domestic political processes.

Commentary and Analysis

The controversy highlights how fragile political rivalries within major parties can escalate into national debates about sovereignty and governance. While Turaki appeared to frame his appeal as a warning about democratic decline, critics argue that invoking foreign assistance risks portraying Nigeria as incapable of resolving its own political disputes.

Observers also note that internal crises within political parties are not uncommon in Nigeria’s democracy. However, such conflicts usually remain within the country’s legal and institutional frameworks, such as courts, party negotiations, or electoral bodies.

The backlash from the presidency therefore reflects both political rivalry and a broader principle: that Nigeria’s democratic challenges should be resolved internally rather than through external pressure.

As the PDP continues to navigate its internal divisions, the exchange between Turaki and the presidential aide has added another layer to an already complicated political landscape.
