Oshiomhole Slams Amaechi Over Rivers Crisis and Railway Project Decisions

Senator Adams Oshiomhole has publicly criticised former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, accusing him of making questionable leadership decisions during his time in public office.

The Edo North lawmaker voiced his concerns during an interview on Channels Television, where he reviewed Amaechi’s tenure both as governor of Rivers State and later as a minister under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Allegations Concerning the Rivers Judiciary

During the discussion, Oshiomhole revisited a controversial period in Rivers State politics, alleging that the judiciary experienced prolonged disruption during Amaechi’s administration.

According to Gossip News Now reports that the senator claimed the crisis was linked to a dispute over the appointment of a Chief Judge in the state. He argued that the situation escalated when attempts were made to install a preferred candidate for the role.

Oshiomhole suggested that the disagreement eventually led to the suspension of normal judicial activities for a lengthy period, which he described as a troubling development for governance and the rule of law.

Criticism of Railway Policy Decisions

Beyond the judiciary issue, the senator also questioned decisions made during Amaechi’s leadership of Nigeria’s transportation sector.

He pointed specifically to railway expansion projects initiated during that time, arguing that the direction of some of the projects reflected misplaced priorities.

According to Oshiomhole, infrastructure investments should have been more closely aligned with Nigeria’s domestic economic needs and major commercial corridors.

Debate Over the Niger Republic Railway Connection

One of the projects he referenced involved the railway line connecting Nigeria to the neighbouring country of Niger Republic.

Oshiomhole questioned the economic logic behind the initiative, suggesting that it raised concerns about the intended flow of goods and the strategic value of the route.

He argued that major Nigerian cities and ports might have required greater infrastructure focus before cross-border rail links were prioritised.

Reflection on Ministerial Authority

While criticising Amaechi’s decisions, Oshiomhole also acknowledged that ministers during the Buhari administration generally had significant autonomy in executing their responsibilities.

He suggested that this freedom meant that officials had considerable influence over how projects were conceived and implemented.

This observation formed part of his broader argument that leadership choices within ministries can have long-term implications for national development.

Commentary and Analysis

The exchange between Oshiomhole and Amaechi highlights ongoing political tensions within Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly among influential figures who previously served within the same governing party.

Disagreements over infrastructure policy and governance decisions often resurface as political actors reassess past administrations and their legacies.

In the case of Nigeria’s railway expansion, analysts continue to debate the balance between regional connectivity, international trade opportunities, and domestic economic priorities.

Ultimately, discussions like these reflect the broader challenge of ensuring that large-scale public projects align with national interests while delivering tangible economic benefits.
