Victor Osimhen has been appointed as the Super Eagles’ main assistant captain, a key leadership development as Nigeria gear up for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

The Galatasaray striker will deputise for newly appointed captain Wilfred Ndidi and has also been entrusted as the team’s first-choice penalty taker.

This follows the international retirement of former captain William Troost-Ekong, who previously held the armband and served as Nigeria’s designated penalty taker.

Gossip News Now reports that Ndidi was officially confirmed as the Super Eagles’ new leader on December 19, 2025.

Alongside Osimhen and Ndidi, other senior members of the squad include Alex Iwobi and Moses Simon, both of whom have been long-standing figures in the Super Eagles setup. Iwobi is currently the most capped player in the team, with Simon following closely behind.

In addition to leadership changes, Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has attracted attention with a striking new look ahead of Nigeria’s opening AFCON fixture against Tanzania.

The Chippa United shot-stopper has debuted a bold blonde hairstyle, seen by many as a confident statement ahead of the tournament.

The 29-year-old goalkeeper has become a cornerstone for Nigeria since his debut at AFCON 2023, where he kept four clean sheets. Having previously played for Enyimba and Katsina United, Nwabali remains a trusted presence between the posts and is expected to showcase his new look when Nigeria face Tanzania at 6:30 p.m. today, December 23.
