Super Eagles stars Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi, and Bright Osayi-Samuel have expressed profound grief following a deadly road accident involving British-Nigerian boxing champion Anthony Joshua in Makun, Ogun State.

The incident occurred on Monday when a Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and two passengers, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, collided with a stationary truck. The vehicle, bearing registration number KRD 850 HN, was severely damaged. While Joshua sustained minor injuries and was quickly transported to a Lagos hospital, his companions tragically lost their lives at the scene. Joshua’s promoters, Matchroom, later confirmed that he is now in stable condition.

Reacting after Nigeria’s 3-1 victory over Uganda at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, Osimhen called the accident “heartbreaking.”

“It’s devastating news. He’s one of the major figures putting Nigeria on the world map for years. This affects many Nigerians. My condolences go to the families of the deceased. Losing lives like this is never easy,” said the Galatasaray forward.

Bright Osayi-Samuel, who plays for Birmingham City, described the impact on the Super Eagles’ dressing room. “It was shocking, especially since it happened back home. Thankfully he [Joshua] is okay, but it’s tragic that two of his friends died. We just hope he recovers fully,” he told ESPN.

Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi, a player for Beşiktaş JK, shared similar sentiments, noting the squad’s collective sorrow. “It was really tough news. Losing his friends is heartbreaking. I wish him strength, and my thoughts are with his family and the families of those who died,” Ndidi said.

The tragic crash comes less than two weeks after Joshua made a triumphant return to the ring, defeating YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul with a sixth-round knockout.
