Internal tensions have surfaced within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State following a disciplinary move taken against a prominent party member. The leadership of Ward 01 in Ibokun, located in Obokun Local Government Area, announced that former Osun State House of Assembly member, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has been suspended indefinitely from the ward structure.

The development stems from allegations involving the handling of party-related funds said to amount to about ₦5.6 million. According to ward officials, concerns about the matter had been discussed among party stakeholders before the decision was eventually reached.

A formal communication outlining the action was forwarded to the Osun State APC Chairman, Tajudeen Lawal. The correspondence, dated January 29, 2026, explained that the resolution followed a meeting where ward executives, leaders, and party members deliberated extensively on issues believed to be affecting unity within the local structure of the party.

Signatories to the document included 18 ward executives and five party leaders who collectively supported the disciplinary measure. Their statement claimed that the former legislator had taken control of an Executive Assistant (EA) position and funds reportedly intended for ward leaders without proper authorization.

Ward representatives stated that the financial allocation was originally designated for the benefit of grassroots leaders. However, they alleged that Oyintiloye secured the EA slot for personal purposes through the involvement of a third party while he was already occupying a federal appointment.

Beyond the financial issue, the ward leadership also accused the former lawmaker of actions they believe contributed to internal divisions within the party. Among the concerns raised were allegations that he organized separate meetings outside the recognized ward structure, an action they claim undermined party unity.

Party officials further noted that Oyintiloye had not been actively involved in ward activities for an extended period. According to them, he had reportedly stayed away from meetings and other local political engagements for more than three years.

In addition, the ward leadership suggested that despite benefitting from various political appointments in the past, the former lawmaker had not provided financial or material support to initiatives within the ward.

As a result of these issues, the ward executives concluded that disciplinary action was unavoidable. The statement emphasized that the suspension means Oyintiloye will no longer act on behalf of the ward or represent its interests within any party structure until further notice.

Key Allegations Raised by Ward Leaders

While explaining the reasons for the suspension, ward officials highlighted several grievances that informed their decision:

  • Alleged control of an Executive Assistant position meant for ward leadership interests
  • Claims of involvement in handling approximately ₦5.6 million without authorization
  • Accusations of organizing parallel meetings within the ward
  • Prolonged absence from ward meetings and grassroots political activities
  • Limited participation or contribution to ward development efforts

The leadership insisted that these issues collectively created concerns about discipline and cohesion within the party at the grassroots level.

Door Left Open for Party Intervention

Despite the strong stance taken by the ward executives, they indicated that the decision was not necessarily the final word on the matter. The leadership said they remain open to intervention from higher levels of the APC hierarchy should party leaders decide to step in.

According to the ward officials, maintaining unity within the party remains their priority, particularly as political activities begin to intensify ahead of future elections.

Commentary and Political Analysis

Suspensions at the ward level often reflect deeper struggles within party structures, particularly when grassroots leaders feel sidelined or excluded from political benefits. In many Nigerian political parties, disputes surrounding appointments, financial allocations, and influence frequently become flashpoints for internal conflict.

The case involving Oyintiloye highlights how tensions between grassroots stakeholders and politically prominent figures can escalate when communication and engagement break down. Allegations of absence from local meetings and the formation of parallel structures typically signal deeper fractures within party ranks.

Political observers note that such disputes can sometimes be resolved through mediation by state or national party leaders. However, if left unresolved, they may weaken internal cohesion and affect party mobilization at the grassroots level.

For the APC in Osun State, how the leadership handles this issue could determine whether the situation becomes a temporary internal disagreement or evolves into a larger political dispute.
