Preparations for the All Progressives Congress (APC) delegate congress in Osun State have intensified following the arrival of the party’s national committee tasked with overseeing the exercise.
The committee, responsible for organizing the gubernatorial delegate congress, paid an official visit to the Osun State APC leadership as part of its preliminary engagements before the ward-level activities commence.
Committee Engages State Party Leaders
Leading the delegation, committee chairman Sheu Umar Dange met with the state party chairman, Tajudeen Lawal, alongside several local government party officials at the APC secretariat located on the Osogbo–Gbongan Road.
The meeting served as an opportunity for the committee to outline its operational plan and reassure stakeholders that the process would be conducted with fairness.
Dange stressed that the congress would cover every ward in the state, noting that the committee had come fully prepared to carry out the exercise without bias.
Assurance of Transparency
According to the committee chairman, transparency remains the guiding principle of the upcoming delegate selection process.
He encouraged party members to raise concerns whenever irregularities arise, assuring them that the committee would investigate such complaints promptly.
Dange also emphasized that stakeholder cooperation would be vital to the success of the exercise, describing participation from party members as an important step toward strengthening the APC’s grassroots structure.
Voting Eligibility Clarified
The committee secretary, Chiedu Eluemunoh, provided additional details about the guidelines for participation.
He explained that only party members who had completed the APC revalidation process would be allowed to vote during the congress.
This clarification, he said, was necessary to avoid confusion among party members.
Eluemunoh noted that simply belonging to the party would not automatically qualify someone to participate in the voting process.
Logistical Preparations Underway
To ensure the smooth conduct of the congress, the committee confirmed that adequate arrangements had been made.
These preparations include the deployment of ad-hoc officials who will supervise the activities across the 332 wards in Osun State.
The committee also confirmed that systems have been established to monitor proceedings and maintain order during the ward congresses.
Appeal Mechanism for Disputes
In anticipation of possible grievances, the committee revealed that a separate Appeal Committee has been constituted.
The panel will review petitions or complaints from party members who may feel dissatisfied with the conduct of the congress.
According to the committee secretary, the appeal process is expected to commence shortly after the ward exercises begin.
Osun APC Leadership Welcomes Delegation
Responding to the delegation, Osun APC chairman Tajudeen Lawal expressed appreciation for the committee’s visit.
He assured the national team that the State Working Committee would provide all necessary support required to facilitate a smooth and credible congress.
Lawal added that the party leadership in the state remains committed to ensuring that the exercise strengthens internal democracy within the APC.
Commentary and Analysis
Delegate congresses are a critical component of Nigeria’s party politics, as they determine the representatives who will participate in selecting party candidates for major elections.
In states like Osun, where political competition remains intense, the credibility of such processes often shapes public perception of a party’s internal democracy.
The APC’s promise of transparency and the establishment of an appeal mechanism suggest an effort to minimize disputes that frequently accompany party primaries.
If implemented effectively, the process could help strengthen party cohesion ahead of future electoral contests in the state.
