Osun PDP Governorship Primary: Adeleke Remains Listed Amid Resignation

Spread the love

The governorship primary election of the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State took an unusual turn after the name of Governor Ademola Adeleke appeared on the ballot despite his earlier resignation from the party.

Party officials supervising the exercise explained that the development occurred because the ballot materials had already been printed before the governor’s decision to step down from the PDP became public.

Ballots Printed Before Resignation Announcement

Members of the electoral committee overseeing the primary clarified that Adeleke’s withdrawal came too late for any modifications to be made to the voting materials.

According to Sunday Solarin, the documents used for the delegate vote had been finalized and distributed before news of the governor’s resignation emerged.

He explained that the party leadership had no practical opportunity to revise or reproduce the ballot papers once the development occurred.

According to Gossip News Now, Adeleke’s resignation was made public late on Monday night, after the ballots had already been packaged and prepared for use in the primary election.

Delegates Directed to Ignore Adeleke’s Name

Because the ballots could not be changed, delegates participating in the primary were advised to disregard Adeleke’s name during the voting process.

Solarin informed party members that only one aspirant remained eligible to contest for the party’s governorship ticket.

The remaining candidate on the ballot was Adebayo Adedamola, who effectively became the sole contender following Adeleke’s departure from the party.

Voting Completed as Collation Begins

Despite the confusion surrounding the ballot papers, the voting exercise proceeded as scheduled.

Delegates concluded casting their votes at the venue of the primary election in Osogbo, after which party officials began sorting and counting the ballots.

Observers from the Independent National Electoral Commission monitored the process to ensure that proper procedures were followed during both voting and collation.

At the time officials began tallying the results, party representatives were seen organizing the ballots across designated tables ahead of the official announcement.

Commentary and Analysis

The situation highlights the logistical challenges political parties sometimes encounter during primary elections, particularly when last-minute political developments occur.

Ballot preparation for large delegate conventions often requires printing and distribution well ahead of the voting process, leaving little room for changes if candidates withdraw unexpectedly.

In this case, Adeleke’s resignation created an unusual scenario where his name remained on the ballot despite no longer being eligible to contest.

Political analysts note that clear communication to delegates helped prevent confusion during the voting process and ensured that the exercise could proceed without interruption.

The outcome of the primary will ultimately determine who represents the PDP in the forthcoming Osun governorship election.
