The administration of Ademola Adeleke has strongly denied allegations circulating from the All Progressives Congress (APC) suggesting that the Osun State government received and mismanaged ₦1 trillion in federal allocations.
Responding to the accusation, the state government described the claim as baseless and politically motivated, insisting that the figures being circulated do not reflect the reality of the state’s finances.
According to Gossip News Now, the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, criticized the allegation as deliberate misinformation aimed at discrediting the achievements of the current administration.
He suggested that the narrative was being pushed ahead of the 2026 political cycle, arguing that opponents may be attempting to shape public perception before the next electoral contest.
Rasheed maintained that the state has never received such an enormous sum since Adeleke assumed office in 2022. Instead, he emphasized that the government has focused on careful management of available funds while prioritizing social and infrastructure development.
To support the administration’s position, the spokesperson outlined several initiatives undertaken during the current tenure, highlighting achievements across different sectors of the state’s economy and public services.
These developments include projects such as:
-
rehabilitation and modernization of healthcare facilities across numerous communities
-
widespread school renovation programs aimed at improving learning environments
-
expansion and construction of road networks stretching hundreds of kilometers
-
upgrades to water supply infrastructure and public utilities
-
ongoing transformation of sports facilities in Osogbo
Beyond infrastructure, the government also pointed to financial management reforms. Rasheed stated that salary backlogs inherited from previous administrations have been partially cleared while pension payments have continued without interruption.
He further explained that thousands of retirees have been enrolled into the state’s health insurance programme, a policy he described as innovative enough to influence similar initiatives at the national level.
On fiscal matters, the spokesperson also referenced data from the Debt Management Office (DMO), noting that Osun State’s debt profile has reportedly been reduced significantly under the present leadership.
In addition, Rasheed argued that despite political disagreements affecting local government finances, the state has continued to ensure that workers and communities do not suffer from administrative disruptions.
He concluded by urging political opponents to abandon what he termed a pattern of misinformation and instead allow public debate to focus on policy performance and governance outcomes.
Commentary & Analysis
The dispute between the Osun State government and the APC reflects the intense political competition that often shapes narratives around public finances in Nigeria.
Accusations involving large financial figures tend to capture public attention quickly, but they also highlight the need for transparency and verifiable data when discussing government allocations and expenditures.
From the government’s perspective, the response emphasizes performance indicators such as infrastructure development, debt reduction, and social welfare initiatives as evidence of responsible governance.
However, such exchanges also demonstrate how political communication frequently blends policy achievements with electoral messaging, particularly as future elections approach.
Ultimately, debates like this underscore the importance of accountability and independent verification, ensuring that citizens can distinguish between political rhetoric and factual financial records.
