The Osun State House of Assembly on Friday passed the Osun State Local Government Accounts Administration Bill, 2025, a move aimed at strengthening financial governance and transparency across the state’s 30 local government areas and area councils.

According to Gossip News Now , the legislation regulates the opening, management, and operation of Local Government Accounts in line with Section 7(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers state assemblies to legislate on local government finances.

The bill is designed to enhance accountability, prevent financial misuse, and ensure strict compliance with statutory fiscal procedures at the local government level.

Under the new law, signatory authority on all Local Government Accounts will rest solely with the Directors of Finance and the Directors of Administration and General Services. Political office holders and their appointees are explicitly barred from serving as signatories—a move widely seen as an effort to remove undue political influence over local government funds.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, announced that a clean copy of the bill would be transmitted to the Governor for assent. Once signed into law, the legislation is expected to promote financial prudence, strengthen institutional integrity, and improve service delivery at the grassroots level across Osun State.
