A fresh wave of political movement has hit Kano State after more than 100 members of the All Progressives Congress in Tarai, Kibiya Local Government Area, abandoned the party and joined the New Nigeria People’s Party. The development adds to the shifting political atmosphere in the state and signals growing grassroots enthusiasm around the NNPP.
The defections were made public through an official statement, which linked the move to increasing support for the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. According to Gossip News Now, the latest crossover is being seen as part of a broader political realignment that continues to reshape loyalties in different parts of Kano.
At the center of the defection was Hajiya Sabuwa Tarai, identified as the APC Woman Leader in the area, who led the group into the NNPP. She explained that the decision was driven by what the defectors described as satisfaction with the governor’s performance and his style of governance.
Rather than speaking only in political terms, the new entrants pointed to visible development efforts and people-focused leadership as the reasons behind their switch. In their view, Governor Yusuf’s actions at both local and state levels have restored confidence in the NNPP and made the party more attractive to those seeking practical results.
Their message suggested that this was not merely a symbolic defection, but one rooted in growing belief that the present administration is delivering enough to win over former opponents. That impression could strengthen the NNPP’s standing even further if more groups take a similar path in the coming weeks.
Welcoming the defectors, Kano State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Alhaji Adamu A. Kibiya, praised their decision and described the NNPP as a platform committed to the welfare of ordinary people. He assured the newcomers that they would not be sidelined and would instead enjoy the same status and opportunities as existing members of the party.
Kibiya also encouraged them to go beyond formal membership by actively supporting the programmes of the state government. His appeal reflected the NNPP’s desire not only to expand its numbers, but also to deepen its grassroots structure and consolidate political influence at the community level.
The statement further hinted that the movement may not end there. Reports suggest that other APC members from neighboring wards within Kibiya Local Government Area may also be considering a switch, a sign that the ruling mood in the area could still be evolving in favor of the NNPP.
Commentary and Analysis
This development may appear local on the surface, but it carries wider political meaning for Kano State. When defections involve more than 100 members at once, especially under the leadership of a recognized party figure, it often signals dissatisfaction within one camp and rising confidence in another.
Governor Yusuf’s administration seems to be benefiting from the political value of visible governance. Whether through development projects, local engagement, or welfare-focused messaging, the NNPP appears eager to frame these defections as proof that its influence is expanding from the grassroots upward.
Another key point is momentum. Political defections often become more powerful when they create a chain reaction. If more APC members from nearby wards follow the same path, the story could shift from a one-off event to a more serious challenge for the opposition’s local strength in Kibiya.
For now, the NNPP will likely see this as both a symbolic and strategic gain. The APC, on the other hand, may need to assess why some of its members are losing confidence and whether similar cracks are forming elsewhere in the state.
