Oyo Labour Party Warns Against Opposition Confrontation, Emphasizes Constructive Politics

The Labour Party (LP) in Oyo State has cautioned that aggressive opposition against the ruling government could harm citizens rather than improve governance. Party leaders stressed that opposition politics should focus on constructive engagement instead of confrontational tactics that may negatively affect residents.

Speaking to journalists in Ibadan on Tuesday, the state’s General Secretary, Fatai Ojetunde, highlighted the role of opposition parties as advisors rather than antagonists. He argued that the priority should be guiding governance through constructive criticism rather than engaging in political battles.

“If we fight the ruling party, it is the people that will suffer. What an opposition party should do is to advise the ruling party and not confront it because citizens of the state will bear the brunt if confrontation is employed,” Ojetunde stated.

He further pointed out that while the current government of Oyo State has room for improvement, the opposition’s main responsibility is to propose solutions and hold the government accountable without resorting to disruptive conflict.

Party Unity and Internal Affairs

The LP also addressed claims of internal divisions, emphasizing that the party’s structure in Oyo State is stable and unified. Ojetunde clarified that national-level disputes involving factions such as Nenadi or Aburi are expected to be resolved within the next three to four weeks.

He reiterated that Rasheed Atayese continues to serve as the recognized chairman of the party in Oyo State, following successful congresses conducted in December 2025. The party, he noted, remains open to new members and defectors, provided they embrace its ideology and principles.

“Once they can align with our ideology, we will allow them, but if not, we will not allow them. We are yet to hear of any members crossing from our party to another political party. There are no card-carrying members of our party who are relevant, defecting to any other party,” Ojetunde added.

Prospects for 2027 Elections

Looking ahead, Ojetunde expressed optimism about the party’s chances in the 2027 general elections, particularly the presidential race. He highlighted that the Labour Party’s growing support base in Oyo State and nationwide could translate into significant electoral gains.

The party remains focused on consolidating its structures, strengthening grassroots engagement, and promoting its ideology as it prepares for future political contests. By emphasizing constructive political engagement over confrontation, LP hopes to position itself as a responsible opposition that prioritizes citizens’ welfare.

Analytical Commentary:

The Labour Party’s stance in Oyo State reflects a pragmatic approach to opposition politics. Rather than adopting a combative posture against the ruling party, LP leaders are emphasizing advisory roles and policy engagement. This strategy may help the party maintain credibility and public support, especially in states where confrontational politics could alienate voters.

Observers also note that by welcoming new entrants who align with party ideology, the LP is positioning itself to expand its influence ahead of the 2027 elections. Internal cohesion, demonstrated by the swift resolution of state-level leadership and congress activities, is critical to this strategy. The party’s emphasis on unity and constructive engagement could serve as a model for opposition politics in other regions.
