PDP Appeals to Sule Lamido to Withdraw Suit Back Turaki-Led Leadership

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido, to reconsider his ongoing legal action against the party and instead support efforts aimed at restoring stability within the opposition platform.

The appeal follows recent remarks made by Lamido during an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, where he criticised how the party handled its internal leadership issues. During the discussion, he also referenced a lawsuit he initiated to challenge aspects of the party’s leadership process.

According to Gossip News Now, the PDP leadership believes that continued litigation could complicate ongoing reconciliation efforts and further deepen internal divisions within the party.

Reacting to Lamido’s statements, Umar Sani, an ally of the PDP National Chairman Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), argued that several of the claims made by the former governor required clarification. He maintained that some of the issues raised had been misunderstood or inaccurately presented.

Sani explained that contrary to Lamido’s assertions, there was no judicial ruling that prevented the PDP from conducting its national convention. Instead, he stated that the court’s earlier directive focused mainly on ensuring that Lamido could participate in the leadership contest after proper verification.

The party official further revealed that the decision was later taken to the Supreme Court through an appeal process. In addition, another court sitting in Ibadan reportedly cleared the way for the party to proceed with its convention, which eventually produced the current national leadership.

To emphasise the party’s position, Sani stated that the PDP’s leadership structure remains legitimate and constitutionally recognised following the convention that elected new national officers.

PDP’s Message to Lamido

In appealing to the former governor, party officials highlighted several reasons why withdrawing the lawsuit could benefit the party at this stage:

Strengthening internal unity among PDP stakeholders
Reducing prolonged legal disputes that could weaken the party

The leadership believes these steps are essential if the PDP hopes to regain political momentum.

Sani also reminded Lamido of his historical role within the PDP, describing him as one of the founding figures who helped shape the party during its formative years. He suggested that such experience and influence should now be used to promote reconciliation rather than legal confrontation.

He further encouraged Lamido to work collaboratively with Chairman Turaki, noting that both leaders had maintained cordial relations in the past. According to him, cooperation between them could contribute significantly to restoring confidence within the party’s ranks.
